The paintings are described in this book reflect British relations with Indonesia, especially in the period 1811-16, when Thomas Stamford Raffles became Lieutenant Governor of Java. Inspiration and guidance he gave to researching the history and culture of the island of Java, signifies in the start of a new era in scientific research on Indonesia, and its role in giving breath back over the Batavia Society of Arts and Science (Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Arts and Sciences) which is almost gone, and in his capacity as President of the Society, gave the opportunity to direct the research.
